Latency Arbitrage

9 views 0

Latency arbitrage is a trading strategy that uses the time delay between two price sources: when a fast price feed shows a new price before a slower broker updates its quote, the trader opens a position at the broker’s old price. The opportunity lasts milliseconds, so latency arbitrage is done by software, not by hand. Its results depend on the speed gap between the feeds, the broker’s execution model and the broker’s rules on this type of trading.

How latency arbitrage works: example

  • Fast feed: a reference price source shows EUR/USD ask moving from 1.10000 to 1.10012. This can be one of the built-in Westernpips Fast Sources or any broker from the list of connectors available in the software. The fastest feeds are usually a direct connection to a broker or venue via FIX, API or ITCH.
  • Slow broker: the broker still shows the old ask of 1.10000 for a few milliseconds.
  • Signal: the software detects a gap of 1.2 pips, larger than the spread and commission.
  • Order: a buy order is sent to the slow broker at 1.10000.
  • Result: if the order fills before the broker updates its price, the position opens at the old price; if the broker has already updated, the order meets slippage, a requote or a rejection.

What latency arbitrage needs

Component Role Glossary
Fast price feed Reference price that updates first: Westernpips Fast Sources or a direct FIX/API/ITCH connection (see connectors) Fast price feed
Slow broker Account where orders are placed at the delayed price B-Book
Low-latency connection VPS near the broker’s server, FIX or platform connector FIX API, Execution latency
Arbitrage software Compares feeds, sends orders, controls execution quality Westernpips Private 7

Risks and broker restrictions

  • Execution risk: the gap can close before the fill. Slippage, requotes and last look rejections reduce or remove the expected result.
  • Broker rules: many brokers classify latency arbitrage as toxic flow. Their terms may allow them to widen spreads, add execution delays, cancel trades or close the account. Read the client agreement before trading.
  • Market risk: positions are exposed to normal price moves until closed, and fast feeds can also lag or disconnect.
  • Regulation: there is no specific FCA or ESMA rule aimed at latency arbitrage by retail clients; in practice it is a contractual matter between client and broker. At the same time, brokers must apply their order execution policy consistently, and ESMA treats asymmetric execution practices as a conflict-of-interest issue under MiFID II.

FAQ about latency arbitrage

Is latency arbitrage legal?

Latency arbitrage is not illegal for retail traders in the UK or EU, but brokers can restrict it in their terms of business. Breaking those terms can lead to cancelled trades or a closed account.

Does latency arbitrage still work?

It depends on the speed gap between your feed and the broker, and on the broker’s execution model. Many brokers have reduced the gap or added protections, so results vary widely and are not guaranteed.

Risk warning: Leveraged trading in Forex and CFDs can result in losses that exceed your initial expectations. Latency arbitrage carries execution, counterparty and account risks, and past results do not guarantee future results. This article is for educational purposes only and is not investment advice.
